About Egypt

Egypt covers more than 5,000 years of recorded history across four travel regions: Cairo and Giza for the Pyramids and Sphinx; Luxor and Aswan for Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Nile temples; Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Marsa Alam for Red Sea diving and resorts; and Siwa and Farafra for the Western Desert oases. Most visitors combine two or three.

Peak season runs October through April, when daytime conditions suit outdoor sightseeing. The Red Sea coast stays warm year-round and is cheaper in summer. Many nationalities qualify for an Egyptian e-visa, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and internal transfers are typically by short-haul flight or Nile cruise.

Frequently Asked Questions about Egypt

1 When is the best time to visit Egypt?
October through April is the comfortable season for sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, with daytime temperatures roughly 20–28°C. Inland summers (May–September) regularly exceed 38°C, while the Red Sea coast stays warm and dry year-round and is cheaper outside the European school holidays.
Most travelers do. Citizens of many countries, including the US, UK, EU member states, Canada, and Australia, can apply online through the official Egypt e-Visa portal or purchase a 30-day visa on arrival at major airports. A few Arab and African nationals enter visa-free; check the official Egyptian government guidance for your specific passport.
The main tourist areas (Cairo and Giza, Luxor and Aswan, the Red Sea coast, the Nile cruise route) receive millions of visitors a year and have a strong security presence. Standard precautions apply: keep valuables secure in crowded markets, ignore aggressive touts at major sites, and use licensed or app-based taxis.
Cairo with Luxor and Aswan is the classic cultural pairing, often joined by a 3–4-night Nile cruise. Adding the Red Sea (usually Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh) gives you a beach extension at the end. Siwa and the Western Desert oases are a separate, longer add-on best reached from Cairo.
Resorts, beaches, hotel pools, and most cruise ships are relaxed about Western swim and casual wear. In cities, towns, and at historical sites, both men and women are more comfortable covering shoulders and knees. Mosques require shoes off, shoulders covered, and women to cover their hair; many provide a wrap at the entrance. Churches follow similar rules minus the headcover.
Egypt uses the Egyptian pound (EGP). Major hotels, larger restaurants, and most licensed tour operators accept Visa and Mastercard, but smaller shops, cafés, taxis, temple ticket booths, and small tips all run on cash. ATMs are widely available in cities and resort areas and are the cheapest way to get pounds; many travelers also keep a small reserve of US dollars or euros for emergencies.
